What Postmark does well

  • Every price is on the page, from $15 for 10,000 emails up to 1.5 million, and the free Developer plan never expires.
  • Transactional and broadcast mail travel on separate message streams, so a newsletter cannot drag down your password resets.
  • Your first purchase is refundable within 30 days if you are not satisfied, and cancellations simply take effect at the end of the period.
  • Strict limits on complaints and bounces keep the shared IP pools clean, which is the reason teams pay for it.
  • Inbound processing, retention up to 365 days, and unlimited domains and users on the higher plans, with DMARC monitoring as an add-on.

Where it falls short

  • The terms allow only permission-based lists, ban purchased or rented ones, and require complaint rates under 0.1% and bounces under 10%, which rules out cold email.
  • It turns away whole categories of sender, including affiliate marketing, list brokers and make-money-online offers.
  • No mailbox: replies need inbound processing on Pro or higher, and there is no Google or Microsoft reputation behind the mail.
  • Basic leaves out inbound processing and caps you at 5 domains and 4 users.
  • Unused emails expire at the end of each month, and downgrades only take effect when the billing period ends.

What Postmark is

Postmark is a transactional email service, run today by ActiveCampaign, for the mail an application has to deliver quickly: receipts, password resets, sign-in links and notifications. Its terms are unusually strict, and that is the product. Postmark limits who may send, how many complaints an account may draw and which industries it will serve, which keeps its shared IPs clean and its delivery fast. The same strictness is why it has no place in a cold email stack.

How Postmark’s pricing works

Pricing follows the number of emails you send and receive each month, and every step is published. The free Developer plan covers 100 emails a month for as long as you like, with no overage. At 10,000 emails Basic costs $15, Pro $16.50 and Platform $18. At 50,000 the three cost $55, $60.50 and $66, at 300,000 they cost $245, $269.50 and $294, and at 1.5 million $775, $852.50 and $930. Extra emails cost $1.80, $1.30 and $1.20 per 1,000 at the lower volumes.

The plans differ in what surrounds the sending. Basic has 5 custom domains, 4 users and 45 days of retention, and no inbound processing. Pro adds inbound processing, retention up to 365 days and 10 domains. Platform makes domains, servers, streams and users unlimited. Dedicated IPs cost from $50 a month per IP on Pro or higher, for senders of at least 300,000 emails a month, and DMARC monitoring is a $14-a-month add-on per domain. Billing renews monthly until you cancel, with cancellations and downgrades taking effect at the end of the period, unused emails expiring at month end, and a refund on your first purchase within 30 days if the service disappoints.

Message streams and broadcasts

Postmark separates mail into message streams. Transactional streams carry the messages a user triggers, and broadcast streams carry opted-in newsletters and announcements, kept apart so a campaign that draws complaints cannot slow a password reset. Broadcast streams add an unsubscribe link and the one-click unsubscribe headers Gmail and Yahoo require. Higher plans allow more streams and servers, Platform makes them unlimited, and every broadcast stream assumes the recipients asked to hear from you.

Why Postmark is the wrong tool for cold email

The terms leave no room. Every list must be a permission-based subscription, purchased or rented lists are prohibited, unsubscribe requests must be honoured, and an account must keep its spam complaint rate below 0.1% and its bounce rate below 10%, or Postmark may pause or cancel it. The terms also name businesses it may refuse outright, including affiliate marketing, list brokers and make-money-online offers. Cold email is sent to people who did not opt in, so it fails the first rule before the rates come into it.

There is a product reason too. Postmark sends from a domain you verify, not from a mailbox, so replies need inbound processing on Pro or higher and code of your own, and no Google or Microsoft account lends the message its reputation.

What to use instead

Send outreach from real mailboxes at a real provider, warmed up, spread across several domains, connected to a sequencer and held to modest daily volumes. Every tool in our inbox provider category works that way, and it is what PureMail’s ready-to-send Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 inboxes are built for. Keep Postmark for the mail your product sends to its own users.

Postmark alternatives

For transactional email, SendGrid offers a 60-day trial and dedicated IPs on its Pro plan. Mailgun adds an EU sending region and a dedicated IP on Scale. Mailtrap pairs its sending API with a testing sandbox. The SMTP relay category compares them.

Who Postmark is for

Product teams that need transactional email to arrive fast and reliably, and want a separate stream for opted-in broadcasts on clean shared IPs. For cold outreach, look elsewhere.

Postmark FAQ

How much does Postmark cost?

As of 8 October 2026, the free Developer plan includes 100 emails a month. At 10,000 emails a month Basic costs $15, Pro $16.50 and Platform $18; at 50,000 they cost $55, $60.50 and $66; and at 1.5 million $775, $852.50 and $930. Extra emails cost $1.15 to $1.80 per 1,000 depending on plan and volume, and dedicated IPs start at $50 a month.

Can I use Postmark for cold email?

No. Postmark's terms allow only permission-based lists, prohibit purchased or rented ones, and require a spam complaint rate under 0.1% and a bounce rate under 10%, with accounts paused or cancelled when they break those rules. Cold outreach to people who never opted in is what those rules exist to keep out. Use real mailboxes and a sequencer for outreach.

Does Postmark have a free plan or trial?

Every account starts on the free Developer plan, which includes 100 emails a month, never expires and allows no overage; it is meant for testing an integration. If you upgrade and are not satisfied, Postmark refunds your first purchase within 30 days of buying it. Later purchases are not refundable.

What are Postmark message streams?

Streams separate kinds of email inside one server: transactional streams for receipts and password resets, and broadcast streams for opted-in newsletters and announcements, kept apart so one cannot harm the other. Broadcast streams add an unsubscribe link and one-click unsubscribe headers automatically. Higher plans allow more streams and servers, and Platform makes them unlimited.

Does Postmark offer dedicated IPs?

Yes, as a managed add-on from $50 a month per IP, available on Pro or higher to senders of 300,000 emails a month or more. Below that volume everyone sends from Postmark's shared, vetted pools, which its complaint and bounce limits are designed to keep clean.
